Mininova Next-on Hitlist ordered to remove infringing Torrents

The war on piracy continues: just after Swedish officials ordered The Pirate Bay’s webhost to take The Pirate Bay down or face a fine of 500,000 kroner ($70,600), it appears that a Dutch civil court has ordered Mininova, another torrent site similar to The Pirate Bay to pull the plug on all “infringing” torrents published on the site. Stichting Brein, a Dutch pro-copyright lobby group has filed a lawsuit against Mininova.

The Utrecht District Court has today ruled in favor of Stichting Brein, meaning that Mininova has three months to remove all copyright infringing torrents. If they do not comply, they will be slapped with a fine of €5 million (which is around $7.6 million USD). The court had this to say on the matter:

“Mininova encourages users of its platform to make copyright material accessible via its platform, helps users find the desired file with the copyrighted work and ensures through its 'administrators' and 'moderators' for the copyrighted works that are accessible through its platform, also useful for its users”, the court said.

"The court believes it's generally known that commercially made films, games, music and TV series are copyrighted and that these works are only copyright-free in exceptional cases", the court ruled.

Mininova also had something to say about this:

“We are obviously not satisfied with this ruling,” said Mininova co-founder Erik Dubbelboer.

“The result of this ruling for Mininova is that we have to re-evaluate our business operations. At this time, we cannot determine what this will actually entail or imply. We will have to examine the verdict thoroughly first.”

With the future of torrent sites looking bleak, just how different will the piracy landscape be in the years to come? Could the age of torrents be grinding to a halt, with legal action being taken on the two major torrent sites out there, and, perhaps more in the future?

Intel Announces core i7 Mobile centrino 2 Availability just in time for Windows 7 Launch

Around the time Windows 7 launches publically, you can expect a new shipment of mobile CPU’s from Intel. Finally, Intel has announced that the Core i7 mobile platform (Calpella) will be shipping in the last part of September. Meaning that when you go to buy a new shiny laptop, you might just find one with Windows 7 and a Centrino Nehalem-based architecture.

MSI will be the first to ship notebooks powered by Intel's new mobile platform. The new line-up consist of the Core i7 7200M, Core i7 8200M, and Core i7 920XM. The Clarksfield version of the new CPU’s will basically be a scaled down version of the desktop CPU. Offering a bit more than just power, the networking (Wireless N). Just like the Core i7 desktop CPU, this mobile CPU will have an integrated DDR3 memory controller

Around the same time, you can expect Intel’s new dual-core ULV processors. The dual core ULV’s (Ultra Low Voltage) are targeted at ultra mobile notebooks, maybe even netbooks. It’s been suggested that this will all happen around IDF (Intel’s Developer Forum). Perhaps hold off on that next notebook purchase for another month or so, and get the most powerful quad-core processor just in time for Windows 7

Intel's Core i5 and Core i3 mobile (Arrandale) are not slated for release until Q1 2010

Project Natal To Ship late next year[X box 360]

No Need Controller to Play............!!!!!

Project Natal, Microsoft’s add on peripheral which will provide a controller free gaming and entertainment experience for Xbox 360, is expected to ship late next year. This was confirmed by THQ CEO Brian Farrell in the company’s Q1 earnings calls:

With respect to the cycle itself, if you look at what's happening in the industry, the fact that we have for example, Natal from Microsoft, a platform addition coming late next year.

Development kits for Natal were sent to game developers as soon as it was demoed at E3 earlier this year. Word was that Natal would see the day of light as soon as it gets enough games developed for it, which may be as soon as 2010 or even 2011 according to some analysts.

This confirmation comes soon after the rumors of Aptina winning a contract to supply 1.3-megapixel CMOS sensors for Project Natal. DigiTimes also predicted Natal to ship late next year.

How successful will Natal be will majorly depend on the games developed for it as well as its price at launch. Seeing the positive buzz around it since launch, it’s safe to predict it would have some strong support with good titles for it when it’s released in 2010.

Firefox 4.0 Mockups Released

Excited for the proposed looks of Firefox 3.7? If that excitement is already dying for you, look no further than the newest mockups for Firefox 4.0!

There's the good old Tabs on Bottom look to be similar with all the previous versions of Firefox, but you can also see a version with tabs on the top. Though this design lacks a proper title and the lost familiarity of the program might confuse people.

Below is an image that shows ideas for the Go/Refresh/Stop/Progress Line. As the GUI of Firefox will generally be achromatic, the sharp colours of the buttons are intended to show users that something's going on. Plus, there is also a Bookmarks widget that was proposed to get rid of the Bookmarks Menu/Bar.Though those can be re-enabled by the user, these were intended to save even more space. Though it does seem that it would be better off with no test, along with the other two dropdown buttons. What do you think?

The unseen evolution of the Windows 7 Taskbar

It’s hard to picture the Windows Taskbar’s evolutionary past at Microsoft, because… well it was developed in the dark. A couple of months ago, I sat down with Chris Holmes and dug up builds from each development milestone at Microsoft and activated the new, secret Taskbar for comparison.

Figure of Milestone 1, 2, and Beta (Milestone 3-like) Taskbars displayed vertically, respectively

The Milestone 1 Taskbar was switched on with the addition of a Boolean DWORD value named EnableCHS, placed in the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced key. One could infer CHS is a symbolic reference to the Chinese and their government’s way of shrouding everything in secrecy. Microsoft has come out and said CHS stood for Can Has Superbar, a reference to “lolspeak”. This iteration of the Taskbar featured very basic grouping features, live preview, and early support for “pinning” although not completely functional.

Milestone 2 builds featured an improved Taskbar, primarily focused on improving past pinning and grouping work. It also featured the beginnings of what we now know as Jumplists and Aero Peek. Unlike the previous Taskbar, the Shell performed more vigorous checks on who you were, under the Microsoft corporate umbrella, to determine if you were authorized to use the new Taskbar. One could infer these additions denote the point in time in which “new Taskbar builds” of Windows 7 had to be shared outside the Shell group for further work (e.g. the teams that work on Libraries, Find and Organize).

At the end of what you could call the “private development” tunnel, Microsoft started work on Milestone 3 builds of Taskbar. It is at this time, pinning and grouping features were smoothed out, attention jerking elements were removed (e.g. the awful white gradient), and the more subtle icon resources installed in preparation for the upcoming technical preview. Unpictured, Jumplists still had the small arrow that appeared upon hover over a Taskbar button.

The Milestone 3 Taskbar received little polish before being pushed out to the public in the first Pre-beta build of Windows 7. While demoed at the Professional Developers Conference in 2008, the Taskbar was not intended for public use. Having received a tip of the new Taskbar’s existence, however, I circumvented its Milestone 2-based protection and developed a tool to enable its public critique. (After all, we, the users, were the ones that were going to be using this from now until the next major Taskbar change. I felt it was important to perfect it now before code freeze.)

Milestone 2 is really a mash of Windows 7 and Vista together. The superbar consists mainly of a white gradient, with the start button/quick launch and system icons area having a 6519-esque gradient. Any toolbars (such as Quick Launch and the Windows Media Player toolbar) will occupy the black gradient area. You can also find the show/hide desktop button, which also triggers Aero Peek in this build.

You can also tell by the superbar’s clarity design-wise that Microsoft was drifting away from the “darker” design of Vista in favor of one that’s “lighter”. Something else that’s worth noting is that in this build, Aero Snap was much snappier, so to speak. The moment the window is dragged to the left, top, or right side of the screen, it snaps without there being an Aero glass preview showing the space that the Windows will occupy. In this build, the ribbon was not yet implemented in any of the Windows apps.
